He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their…

I like this book, it resonates with my life. My journey so far from lower middle class in small-town India to high tech world of USA – like the author said – is a mix of circumstance/luck, people/life angels, hard work and timing. Just like the story of author’s mother.

If I could summarize the whole book into one word, it’d be ‘karma’. If you are a strong believer in karma and are self-driven, you do not need to read this book. Your future depends on your karma, so work hard and be fair, put in those 10000 hours for a bright future in your field. Your circumstances/luck depend on your past life karma and birth time/place (horoscope), this is the part the scientific/rational world finds it hard to believe. But backed by analysis of few examples like Bill Gates, everyone believes that it happens by chance.

Any way, this book is a great read. I’d suggest this to anyone who believes success is only by luck and hard work does not play any role.
